RATIONAL: Communication innovations have accompanied theological revolutions. The printing press, for instance, unleashed reformation movement. Once again we face a radical shift in the mode of communication. The digitalization of communication has radically transformed humanity and society. With all of its convenience and interdependence, the increasing digitalization of humanity also results in social ills – addiction, alienation, and fragmentation of human community. In this milieu, Christianity in the 21st Century begs for in-depth reflections and illuminations of what it means to live out the gospel in the age of commodified time and space. What does living out the gospel look like in a post growthmanship era where modernity¢®&macr;s mantra, ¢®¡Æthe bigger the better¢®¡¾ no longer seems sustainable with 7 billion people inhabiting the earth? Does the shift of the gravity of Christianity from the global north to the global south mirror changing faces? Will the global south, despite its majority status, repeat the western version of Christianity? Will they simply remain western with nonwestern faces? How can the changing face of Christianity reflect the soil, geography, and culture of the people of God rather than repeating the displaced Christianity of the west? To grapple with these questions and to examine the spiritual pulses of Christianity, concerned people from Korea, U.S., and China will create a third space (intercontinental & interdisciplinary) for dialogue. We seek to examine the spiritual hearbeat(YoungMaek) of Christianity today and to retrieve the wholeness of the gospel.

Yinist Spirituality for Ecological Stewardship
As our ecosystem radically changes, we witness a dramatic human toll due to extreme floods, droughts, and massive oil spills. Meanwhile politicians remain stuck in endless ideological debates; some continue to oppose the science behind global climate change, in effect denying our dire environmental situation. Churches' pulpits remain otherworldly as if God of creation is to be confined into the four walls of the church buildings. Modernity disconnected humanity from the rest of God¡¯s creation, and this position is buoyed and rooted in evangelical Christian faith.
As a result, too many of us stand idle as we witness the poisoning and squandering of our most basic resources: the air we breathe and the water we drink. Daily reports come in of catastrophic air pollution, scarce access to clean water, rising ocean levels that fuel hurricanes, a severe droughts and flooding. d while flooding on the west coast. The Los Angeles Times runs headlines like, ¡°Antarctic glaciers said to be ¡®past point of no return¡¯¡± (May 13, 2014). Do droves of disaster reports numb us while we experience the groaning of all creation (Rom. 8:22)?
My journey towards ecological living began in 1992 with the study and understanding of The Asian cosmology of Daoism. Impacted internalized syncretism, I could not embrace Daoism as a theological paradigm but found permission from Frijof Capra¡¯s seminal book, Dao of Physics. As Daoism provided an answer to Capra in explaining a both-and phenomenon in quantum physics, it also provided an alternative paradigm to my dissonant reductionist Cartesian paradigm in the educational curriculum. Emboldened by the connection between quantum physics and Daoism, I coined the term Yinist in 1993 as a comprehensive and holistic paradigm. The term also provided me with an intrinsic category of belonging beyond the existing feminist discourses and amidst emerging womanist and muerista approaches. Compelled by the missing link of Asian Americans in the conversation, the Yinist concept filled the void.

Unfortunately, I have found the presentation of the Yinist paradigm a lonely journey. The idea was too often received as: 1) too foreign to the dominant discourse and 2) too fearful of syncretism, if not marginalization, of the minority.
The Fear of Syncretism
Despite Christianity¡¯s long-standing history of transformations into Judaization, Hellenization, Westernization, and others, the term ¡°syncretism¡± is a stumbling block in approaching Christianity from cultural lenses. As Adolf Harnack puts it, regarding Christianity, ¡°From the very outset it had been syncretistic upon pagan soil; it made its appearance, not as a gospel pure and simple, but equipped with all that Judaism had already acquired during the course of its long history.¡± Lamin Sanneh states that, ¡°pluralism was rooted for Paul in the Gentile breakthrough, which in turn justified cross-cultural mission¡¦ Faith, as the absolute gift of a loving, gracious God, is the relativizing leaven in culture.¡±
In this essay I will interact convergent theologies--Yinist cosmology with ecotheology and planetary theology. These three systems share similar concerns and strive to retrieve the lost concept of ecological stewardship and humanity¡¯s responsibility as caretakers, not conquerors, of God¡¯s creation.
A great resource in attempting to answer the role of religion and ecology, Miller and Liu¡¯s Daoism and Ecology address pertinent questions:
Have issues of personal salvation superseded all others?
Have divine/human relations been primary?
Have anthropocentric ethics been all consuming?
Has the material world of nature been devalued by religion?
Does the search for otherworldly rewards override commitment to this world?
Did the religions simply surrender their natural theologies and concerns with exploring purpose in nature to positivistic scientific cosmologies?
The answers to these questions continue to be ¡®yes,¡¯ pushing for an investigation of the historical roots for this regrettable divorce. For this essay, I cover Yinist spirituality for ecological stewardship because the salvific focus of the Christian pulpit rarely address this dire issues.
Yinist Stewardship
An Yinist spirituality parallels planetary theology and echotheology. The Yinist concept highlights yin, the Daoist feminine energy, over our current state of excessively dominant masculine yang energy. Together, yin-yang is an inclusively interwoven both-and concept rather than an either-or concept. Overarching problems ensue with an imbalance of these two energies. Chinese medicine defines this imbalance of disease in people as well as in ecosystems. As a philosophical paradigm, Daoism promotes a balanced and holistic practice of simple living and responsible stewardship.

Placing yin explicitly in the foreground, the overburdened yang energy oscillates into the background. Rather than asserting and competing, the yin energy embraces and balances, encompassing gender, ecology, nature, health, and God. Yin is holistic, synthesizing, and complementary. Yinist feminism, therefore, diffuses false dichotomies derived from dualistic paradigms: male versus female, humanity versus nature, God apart from humanity, this world apart from the other world.
According to Jung Young Lee, the yin-yang concept offers a ¡°cosmocentric anthropology¡± that comprehensively covers gender, nature, and food, among other things. Hence, according to Daoism, human beings and nature are inseparable. Lee¡¯s work greatly furthered the development of theology from Asian paradigms. Using a Daoist lens, Lee critiqued reductionistic western theology:
While the West is interested in an anthropocentric approach to cosmology, East Asia is more interested in a cosmocentric approach to anthropology. In East Asia, anthropology is a part of cosmology; a human being is regarded as a microcosm of the cosmos. The inseparable relationship between humanity and the world is a distinctive characteristic of East Asian philosophy.
Translated into English, Dao is ¡°path¡± or ¡°way,¡± the source of all living creatures. Dao-te-ching, referring to the immanence and transcendence of formlessness and namelessness, translated into Latin in the 16th century by Jesuit missionaries in China, was presented to the British Royal Society in 1788. The translators commented that the Dao-te-ching showed that ¡°the Mysteries of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Incarnate God were anciently known to the Chinese nation.¡± In earlier research, I noted the confluent worldviews between Daoism and Celtic druids that suggests the interchange of the two cultures. In contrast to the yang dominated Newtonian and Cartesian worldviews, Daoist and Celtic worldviews reflect both yin and yang traits. The beauty of Daoism is its comprehensive approach to gender, ecology, nature, health, and food. Humanity and nature are inseparable in Daoism with the life-giving energy of ch¡¯i extending to all creation. Ch¡¯i keeps yin-yang from collapsing into dichotomy.
Ruach and Ch¡¯i
Overlaps between Daoist and Celtic spirituality correspond to overlaps between the Hebrew concept of ruach and the ancient Chinese cosmology of ch¡¯i. Many Asian American theologians have researched the paralleling concept of ruach and ch¡¯i. Renewed interest in a pneumatological approach to theology, unlike the Christological perspective, may steer discourses in a unifying manner among world religions with ¡°the ubiquity of the cosmic Spirit.¡±
Among theologians, Jurgen Moltmann from Germany and Stanley Samartha from India bridges western and eastern theology through the ubiquitous Spirit of ruach. Moltman¡¯s pneumatologies and Daoists¡¯ chi connects the sacred Holy Spirit (the primordial ch¡¯i) and the human spirit (substantial ch¡¯i).
Ch¡¯i is the life force that interpenetrates all entities, animate and inanimate. Likewise, Ruach is described by Yun as ¡°a storm or force in both body and soul¡± that is found in everything, keeping all things in being and in life similar to ch¡¯i. I concur with Yun¡¯s critique of Barthian theology that disconnects God¡¯s Spirit from human spirit whereas Moltmann argues for the continuity of the Spirit in both God¡¯s creation and the church. Due to fear of syncretism embedded in many nonwestern Christians, Moltmann¡¯s voice offers permission for Asian/Asian American theologians to boldly bridge pneumatology and Daoism they may offer a paradigmatic shift in our views of humanity, nature, God, and the Bible toward a more sustainable world.
(Yinist) Theology of the Heart
In Romans, the Apostle Paul emphasizes that, ¡°God¡¯s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us¡± (Rom. 5:5, NIV). Luke states, ¡°the good is produced by the good treasure of the heart¡± (Luke 6:45). A pioneer of Asian theology, Choan-Seng Song echoes scripture stating, ¡°to know one¡¯s heart is to know one¡¯s whole being.¡± Quoting prophets in the Hebrew Bible and the Apostle Paul in the New Testament, Song highlights the importance of the integrated heart in a western reason-based theology and notes that the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel ¡°highlight the conversion of the heart as most fundamental in our life.¡± The prophet Ezekiel speaks to the condition of a new heart: ¡°I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh¡± (Ezek. 36:26, italics added). Song interprets the two contrasting hearts: the

former representing the heart in ¡°revolt against God¡± and the latter, ¡°the person who has been transformed by the redeeming love of God.¡± Furthermore, the heart is not only ¡°the seat of mental and spiritual power and capacities¡± but also, the root of ¡°religious and moral conduct.¡±
The core theory in the school of Neo-Confucianism (Wang Yang Ming) is ¡°the heart principle¡± which emphasizes cultivating the nature of the heart. These core Confucian spiritual exercises integrate the human experience with immanent transcendence. It is Neo-Confucianism that synthesized Buddhism and Daoism with its core principle of the heart. Therefore, in seeking a holistic theological construction, these concepts emphasize the fact that the heart embodies the whole person in relationship to God. A theology of heart cultivates human hearts, creating a bridge to the reductionistic Cartesian theology of the west. Song¡¯s critique of the western reductionistic theology merits our attention today:
When emotion takes leave of the heart as the seat of human spirit, our theology becomes an emotional theology. . . . On the other hand, when reason is separated from the heart, there emerges a cold theology that tries to penetrate the mystery of God with a cold logic.
Song sees the heart as transrational and beyond the worldviews that ¡°intuit the mystery of Being,¡± and that neither reason nor emotion alone can grasp. This Being, agape, is to be perceived and encountered at the crossroads of creation and redemption.
A theology of heart, therefore, offers ample missiological implications in overcoming what Paul G. Hiebert addressed as the two-tiered Neo-Platonic theology of religion and science that creates an excluded middle. In the West the middle level offers guidance to the unknown future, the crises of present life, and the unknown past. This middle level began disappearing during the 17th and 18th centuries with the rise of Cartesian dualism in science and religion. The consequence of the polemic worldview includes secularization on the one hand and the rise of the Charismatic movement on the other.
In constructing a holistic and included middle theology, I therefore argue for a theology of heart that also extends to the outer contexts of ecology and the planet. Sallie MacFague¡¯s planetary theology helpfully bridges the missing link of theology and extends the concept of stewardship to time, resource, talents and nature. In Life Abundant, MacFague refers to humanity¡¯s alienation from nature and self. This alienation leads to ¡°apartheid thinking¡±—¡°belief that our lives and our economy exist apart from nature.¡± It is impossible to see how individuals or the human community can proposer apart from a sustainable planet. In contrast to the atomic values, God¡¯s ecosystem is synergistic and interdependent for all creation. McFague warned a decade ago that neoliberal economic policy will ravage God¡¯s earth. Therefore, an alternative economic paradigm of the household economy, oikos, maximizes the optimal functioning of the planet¡¯s gifts and services for all. In the face of global homogenization of human culture around ¡°maximum profit,¡± our world begs for paradigmatic

change, not merely a programmatic change.
Conclusion
In overcoming the western reductionistic worldview, and the learned fear of syncretism, I offer a Yinist spirituality of heart for Chrsistianity next. It overcomes the binary western theological lens that results in anthropocentrism and the desacralization of nature. Ironically, history repeats itself. Daoism emerged during the time of Confucian domination and its corruption in ancient China. As China today has become a global economic force and consequently among the leading climate polluters, this demands a retrieval of ancient Chinese cosmology. It is my belief that this cosmology of the Dao deems significant today for churches to embrace.
For some time now theological education has stood at the crossroads between the practical application of theology and its academic study. This tension has unfortunately led to an over-emphasis on the intellectual over the experiential, the yang over the yin. It is my hope that a holistic epistemology that brings a yinist balance may offer an integrative theological construct that honors all of God¡¯s creation for all generations to come.
